A pulley functions as a wheel with a groove that holds a rope or cable. This component is also known as a drum or a sheave. The groove plays a crucial role in maintaining the position of the rope. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the lifting and lowering of heavy objects. By attaching an object to one end of the rope and applying force to the other end through a downward pull, a pulley efficiently facilitates movement. As a result, the wheel connected to the rope rotates due to the force applied on the rope, leading to the upward movement of the load on the opposite end.

Pulleys are engineered to facilitate the transportation and redirection of taut cables or belts, as well as power transfer between shafts and cables or belts. When a pulley that does not transfer power to a shaft but guides the cable or applies force is mounted on a frame or shell, it is referred to as a block. In such cases, the pulley itself may be called a sheave.

A typical pulley features grooves between flanges along its circumference to secure the cable or belt in place. The driving element in a pulley system can take different forms such as ropes, cables, belts, or chains.
